Sumba, Indonesia.

One of the most remote and unique islands of the entire archipelago. It has an own culture. Different religion, different villages and even different appearances then the other islands. Sumba is  a tropical paradise but even one of the few places on the entire world to own original megalithic sites which are still utilized from the Marapu practitioners. Marapu is an animist religion that probably exists only in this little corner of our planet.

The megalithic sites are still hand-built in many villages for some wealthy families who will use those as family tombs. The stones for these constructions are taken and transported, with bare hands, from the closest stone cave which might be even some kilometers from the village. Everyone who’s working on it is gonna get payed with a massive lunch where you could try some delicious pigs, buffaloes or wild horses.

In Sumba animals are not killed just to be eaten. Usually are just sacrifices in order to give presents to the gods. Animal sacrifice is a basic step to make easier the reincarnation process. The more is important the death person in the village the more animals will be sacrificed that’s why many families are tumbled down after a bereavement. 

The majority of people grows rice and fruits and everyone, even children, is involved in the works. 

The woman is pretty important in the family management and women are often engaged in really tough works such as the construction of  artificial banks around the houses to keep the water outside the village in the wet season. Those constructions are made of stones picked and transported , with bare hands, from women from the river till the village.

My trip trough this place and between these people took almost one year and the first step has been actually try to get used to their curious and shocked glances at the sight of a west guy and even get used to be the reason why children run away. This was even amplified from those swords that every man, did not matter the age, was wearing on the waist. First times I have tried to don’t freak out and all my fears about that simply flew away once I realized that this is just part of their culture indeed they are constantly training themselves for the famous festival called Pasola in which swordsmen are dueling riding their horses.

My life there has been characterized especially by the research of gazes. You must work pretty hard to destroy walls made of mistrust, difference and preconception which are dividing people apparently so different but actually trough the ruins of these walls you’ll find out that we are incredibly similar humans and that’s the moment you might understand how important is a gaze so we will feed our souls just being eyes in the eyes.

Uno dei posti piu remoti e unici di tutto l’arcipelago. Si distingue dalle altre isole per una cultura tutta a se; religione, villaggi e anche tratti somatici.

Sumba è un paradiso tropicale, uno dei pochi luoghi del pianeta nel quale sono ancora presenti siti megalitici originali ancora intatti e soprattutto ancora utilizzati per riti (prevalentemente funebri) della religione animista Marapu, i cui praticanti si trovano quasi esclusivamente in questo angolo di mondo.

I siti megalitici vengono ad oggi costruiti a mano in molti villaggi per conto di famiglie benestanti che li utilizzeranno come tombe di famiglia. Le pietre utilizzate per la costruzione dei siti vengono portate dalla cava al villaggio rigorosamente a mano. Tutti gli abitanti del villaggio impegnati nei lavori verranno ripagati con un banchetto organizzato dalla famiglia committente che darà a tutti la possibilità di assaggiare ottimi maiali, bufali o cavalli selvatici.

A Sumba gli animali non vengono quasi mai uccisi al fine di nutrirsi però ci sono sacrifici animali quasi tutti i giorni all’unico scopo di donare qualcosa agli dei. Il sacrificio animale è un passaggio fondamentale che agevola il processo di reincarnazione. Quanto più è importante il defunto nel villaggio, tanti più animali verranno sacrificati ecco perchè spesso le famiglie colpite dal lutto vanno in rovina sacrificando la maggior parte del loro bestiame.

La maggior parte degli abitanti di Sumba coltiva riso e frutta e nel lavoro sono impegnati proprio tutti, persino i bambini.

L’organizzazione della famiglia si poggia sulla donna che è anche impegnata in lavori di forza. Le donne sono impegante, per esempio, nella costruzione di argini al fine di evitare l’allagamento dei villaggi nella stagione delle piogge. Tale costruzione comporta il trasporto di pietre dal fiume al villaggio, percorso che può essere anche di svariati chilometri.

Il mio viaggio tra questa gente è durato quasi un anno e il primo step è stato cercare di dissimulare l’imbarazzo per i loro sguardi straniti e curiosi alla vista di un occidentale ed abituarsi ad essere motivo di fuga per i bambini e di diffidenza estrema per gli adulti. Tale diffidenza non avrebbe suscitato in me ansia, non fosse per il fatto che gli uomini di tutte le eta’ portano addosso una spada. L’ansia è passata quando ho scoperto che questa cosa fa parte della loro cultura infatti gli uomini si allenano tutto l’anno per il famoso festival chiamato Pasola nel quale tutti gli spadaccini si sfidano in duelli a cavallo.

La mia vita li è stata caratterizzata sopratutto dalla ricerca di sguardi. Bisogna saper pazientemente lavorare per smantellare e abbattere i muri di diffidenza, differenza e preconcetto che separano persone apparentemente così diverse, ma poi peró, tra le macerie di questi muri ci si scopre esseri umani decisamente simili e allora si comprende il valore di uno sguardo e stare occhi negli occhi sembra nutrire l’anima.
